STEMThink

Bridging the gap between STEM and mental health;
Changing the way youth view a career in STEM.
Our Mission

We're a youth led nonprofit focusing on providing a comprehensive STEM education to underrepresented youth. We connect this premier education to mental health, teaching our participants that their education doesn't have to come at the expense of their mental well being.
Our Programs

STEMThink has six main programs:
our
summer camps,
semester long workshops,
virtual hackathon: HackSTEMThink, activity book, STEM kits, and virtual YouTube series: STEMThink at Home.

Our Programs and Events

STEMThink Summer Camps

At STEMThink, we provide free, one-week camps during the summer, and teach middle school girls website and app development skills. We also include curriculum that educates participants on the importance of mental health, providing them with self-care skills and ways to cope with stress and anxiety. Our camps are held in three locations across Kentucky, in Eastern, Western, and Northern Kentucky. This year, because of COVID-19 concerns, our camps will be held remotely over the video conferencing platform: Zoom. Participants will have the option of choosing between three sessions. All sessions will be held between 1-5 pm EST.
STEMThink at Home

STEMThink at Home is a video series where participants can learn about advanced STEM topics through hands on experimentation in the comfort of their own homes. The STEMThink at Home program provides free YouTube videos for youth to learn about topics covering biology, chemistry, physics, and computer science by conducting experiments with materials that can be readily found in most homes.

STEM Sets

The STEMThink STEM Sets Program aims to impact more students outside of our typical workshops, summer camps, and hackathon. Through funds from grants, we are able to provide customized boxes filled with all of the non-perishable materials necessary to conduct the experiments listed in our activity book, as well as a complimentary activity book, to students around Kentucky at no cost to them.
HackSTEMThink

HackSTEMThink is a free event where middle schoolers spend 24 hours in groups of up to 4 people developing an application designed to spread mental health awareness and/or solve a mental health issue in their community. HackSTEMThink also features a women in tech virtual panel, workshops to learn about different programming languages, networking opportunities, and monetary prizes for the top winners. HackSTEMThink is grateful to have 10+ sponsors for the event. Our sponsors provide participants with prizes, speakers for our panel, and/or support for our event.

Semester Long Workshops

Using our innovative mental health curriculum and comprehensive, hands-on STEM curriculum, participants of our semester long workshops will have the opportunity to explore different outlets of STEM while learning about the importance of mental health. We focus primarily on low-income middle schools to conduct our semester long workshops in, and have chapters in over 2 countries and 6 states.
Activity Book

STEMThink published "STEM and Mental Health Activities for Kids," an interactive activity book, designed for students in elementary school. In this book, we walk kids through different STEM experiments, while explaining the scientific reasoning behind them. The book is built upon existing STEMThink curriculum, developed by STEM and mental health professionals.

Our Curriculum

STEM

During our summer camps, our participants will learn to code in HTML, the primary language used in the development of websites, as well as Android App Developer, a tool used for building Android apps. Participants will then use their coding skills to develop an application designed to solve an issue in their community, connecting technology to activism.
STEMThink also aims to teach our participants concepts in biology, chemistry, and physics through hands-on experiments in our semester-long workshops and virtual series.

Mental Health

We provide effective techniques to our participants, teaching them how to deal with anxiety and stress, providing them with valuable skills that they can carry into high school and beyond. Our mental health curriculum focuses on teaching our participants what mental health is, why it's important, what mental illnesses are, and how to sustain good mental health.
We also strive to teach our participants time management, communication, and leadership skills, preparing them to act as effective change makers in their community.

Our Impact

Grow

Passionate about spreading our mission, STEMThink has grown from an organization based solely in Kentucky to a network of chapters and team members across the world, including India, North Carolina, Nebraska, and more. We're passionate about providing educational opportunities to youth everywhere, and by spreading our mental health and STEM curriculum, we're empowering the next generation of changemakers, leaders, and activists in STEM.
Educate

Developing our mental health curriculum alongside psychologists and researchers at the University of Louisville and STEM curriculum under the guidance of STEM professionals and advisors, we're committed to bringing quality education to all of our participants, especially those of underrepresented backgrounds. We work to make this curriculum as accessible as possible, uploading onto our website and providing free events to girls across the world.
Inspire

The majority of our events feature guest speakers, all of whom are strong, successful women in STEM. We work to ensure that middle school girls have role models in the STEM industry whom they can look up to. Providing them with these speakers also ensures that they can learn about a wide variety of professions. We empower our participants to pursue a career in STEM, creating curriculum that connects STEM with mental health and spotlighting speakers that echo our mission.
